Amit Chaudhuri’s Clearing a Space: Reflections on India, Literature and Culture is a collection of literary essays written over a period of time for journals such as the Times Literary Supplement and London Review of Books. Even though it is a disparate collection in a sense, close reading of these essays reveal a common concern, which in the writer's own words is ‘clearing a space for a particular kind of criticism’ especially in the context of Indian writing in English. Chaudhuri’s writing is refreshing and attempts to pose a challenge to the existent critical discourse around this area which tends to draw heavily from Post Colonialism which, he says is itself fast becoming a ‘significant orthodoxy.’
